History of the Air Jordan 4 “Fear”

The Air Jordan 4 “Fear” first released in 2013, alongside the eponymous Jordan 3 and Jordan 5. Though not the number one silhouette in the Jumpman catalog at the time of release, the AJ4 quickly stood out as the most coveted of the collection, commanding the highest price on the grey market by a wide margin. Simply put, the colorway stood out as the best of the three—its icy, gradient-like disposition offered far more intrigue than the olive hues of its two counterparts.

Since nearly every major moment in Michael Jordan’s career has already been used as a reference point for a Jordan retro release, the “Fear” Pack utilizes more abstract inspiration. Rather than a specific stat line, game, or playoff streak, the three-pair capsule takes inspiration from His Majesty’s unwavering competitive spirit, flipping the concept on its head with insoles that read “I’m Afraid Of What I Will Not Become” and “You’re Afraid Of What I Will Become.”

The future of the “Fear Pack” and the AJ4 in 2024

With the Air Jordan 3 “Fear” already re-releasing in 2023 as a 10th anniversary release, these AJ4s all but confirm a Jordan 5 reprise in 2025. Adopting this staggered annual cadence means each pair aligns well with the respective model’s 35th anniversary.

In that sense, this will essentially serve as the capper to a jam-packed year of Jordan 4 releases. Eleven distinct colorways will have hit retailers by the pair’s release in November. While the women’s-exclusive Air Jordan 4 “Net” release date will be pushed further into 2024, this is the latest edition to generate a high level of anticipation (at least until we get to the 2025 release slate).
